We are very happy to announce the launch of 3 137's artistic programme for 2023. The programme starts with the one day conference Artists' Estates. The Afterlife of Artworks, in collaboration with the National Museum of Contemporary Art. The conference is co-curated with Tina Pandi, curator of the museum.
The management of an artist’s tangible and intangible heritage is inextricably intertwined with the work of museums, history of art as well as the art market. Especially as regards the legacy of contemporary artists, issues of care, management, selection, inclusion and promotion of its unappreciated aspects are of key importance.
How does an artwork remain “alive”? What is the legal framework for the protection, management and promotion of artworks by deceased artists? What does the phrase “Artist’s Estate” entail, and what is its role in the private and public spheres? What are the challenges as regards the preservation of an artist’s legacy in terms of management, research and curation?
SPEAKERS
Keynote speakers at the conference will include Robert Beavers, filmmaker and creator (together with Gregory Markopoulos) of the Temenos Archive, Katerina Thomadaki, filmmaker, multimedia artist, and theoretician, co-creator with Maria Klonaris, and Anna Schäffler, art historian and curator.
Participants: Chloe Akrithaki, Poppy Alexiou, Georges Armaos, Klea Charitou, Anastasia Douka, Pigi Konstantinou, Pierrina Koriatopoulou, Nefeli Papadimitriou, Yorgos Sapountzis, Dimitris Tsoumplekas, Eirini Vourloumis, Yerasimos Yannopoulos.

The conference inaugurates 3 137’s programme for 2023 entitled Encounters. The main intent of the programme is to highlight the complexity of the future account of an artwork, in parallel, share stories of connections between different generations, between artists, curators, historians, collectors, relatives. The programme takes its title from Martha’s Christofoglou text Encounters, included in the publication After the explosion you can still hear the light, to be published in the coming months by paraguay press. The publication derives from 3 137’s long term research project on artistic production in Greece during the 1970s and its affinities with the present.
Encounters is realized with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports.
